Hospital Vila Franca de Xira was inaugurated by the Minister for Health, Paulo Macedo, at a ceremony attended by the CEO of José de Mello Saúde, Salvador de Mello, and the mayors of the five municipalities in which the new unit operates. The new hospital has increased and improved the access to health for the people of Vila Franca de Xira, Alenquer, Arruda dos Vinhos, Azambuja and Benavente.
Open since early April, the new hospital has increased and improved the access to health for the people of Vila Franca de Xira, Alenquer, Arruda dos Vinhos, Azambuja and Benavente, and has also allowed for a very sensitive improvement of the healthcare services provided.
With the entry of the new management, in June 2011, new specialties have been made available – ophthalmology, ENT, pulmonology and neurology – which were joined by psychiatry and infectiology, in the new facilities. The Hospital also has new diagnostic tools, and new and modern equipment in the Operating Theatre and in the Intensive Care Unit.
As a result of these improvements, over the first four months of 2013, the Hospital has displayed a growth of 56% in the number of appointments in comparison to the same period of 2011, and the average wait time is now 50 days, rather than the 84 day average wait time of 2011.
Scheduled surgeries have also displayed a remarkable evolution: over the first four months of 2013, we had more than twice as the operations we had in the same period of 2011.
Since June 2011, Hospital Vila Franca de Xira has been reinforcing its staff, having hired 189 employees – more than a half of them are doctors and nurses.
The Hospital participates in several studies conducted by official institutions, having obtained very good results in the National System of Health Quality Assessment [Sistema Nacional de Avaliação em Saúde – SINAS] - it is one of the few hospitals in the country to have received the highest scores (three stars) - having also received very good results in the recent Health System Central Administration [Administração Central do Sistema de Saúde - ACSS] benchmarking study, namely on outpatient surgery, in which it was one of the hospitals to have received highest rankings.
Hospital Vila Franca de Xira is a Portuguese National Health System hospital managed by José de Mello Saúde on a public private partnership basis.
